What is a bedside cot?
A bedside crib, also referred as a bassinet or a co-sleeper is a baby cot attached to your adult bed. This allows your newborn bedside cot to sleep right next to you in a safe environment. This is a form of co-sleeping in a safe manner that doesn’t increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing and can help you build a bond with your newborn.
The cots usually have a side that can be raised, so you can easily reach your newborn at night to feed and comforting. This is especially useful for mums recovering from a c-section. Many are portable or foldable so you can use them to travel or as a temporary solution for newborns who aren’t quite ready to be able to transition into a full-sized crib.
Look for a crib with an air-conditioned mattress, as well as an appropriate cover to shield your baby from staining. You may also want to purchase baby-safe items such as the blanket or teether.
If you’re looking for a long-term alternative, some cribs are equipped with conversion kits that allow you to convert them into a cot or a toddler bed at the time of need. This is a great option for extending their life span and making the transition smoother. Some models have a removable portion at the top that can be turned into a bassinet. Some can be used in conjunction with a standard adult bed or a high-rise one. This is a great option for families that are planning to travel frequently or change between bedrooms at night. Consider the dimensions of your room to ensure you fit comfortably in the crib. A lot of cribs have risers which can be used to create an incline for babies with reflux.

The Iora is a bedside cot 6 months plus crib that is smaller and folds flat. It also comes with a travel case to allow it to be carried anywhere. Our mom testers found it easy to move from room to room and felt it was a great size for a small bedside cot, not too big or too small. They also appreciated the large storage basket, perfect for storing nappies or bedding.
This is a great choice for parents looking to co-sleep, but do not want to share their beds, or whose partners might be suffering from mobility issues, such as arthritis or back pain. Our mum testers love the ease with which they can access their child in the Iora and it also has an optional reflux incline to help alleviate gas.
Our mums appreciate the fact that it meets NICE guidelines which state that you should place the infant in the crib or Moses basket on its own (with no blankets, toys, pillows, etc). They also state that the mattress is firm and comfortable for the baby and easy to find sheets for. It’s not as light as other cribs that are smaller on our list, so if prefer something lighter and easier to move around, consider a different alternative.
